五色令人目盲，五音令人耳聾，五味令人口爽；馳騁畋獵令人心發(fā)狂，難得之貨令人行妨。 是以圣人為腹不為目，故去彼取此。

Controllingthe Senses

Theoverwhelming colors blind one’s eye.

Thevarious tones will deafen one’s ear.

Thediversified flavors will jade one’s taste;

Racingand hunting will drive you to wildness，

raregoods will unleach one sesires.

Therrefor, the Enlightened Individuals

value the inner self and not the eye.

He prefers what is within to theslavery of human greediness.

五彩繽紛使人眼花繚亂，繁雜的音調(diào)使人耳聾，過(guò)度的美味佳肴敗壞人們的胃口和身體；縱情馳騁在獵場(chǎng)上，使人心性放蕩發(fā)狂。稀有珍貴的物品讓放縱貪欲，行為不軌。

因此，真正悟道的人求取內(nèi)在的、有節(jié)制的生存之需，而擯除外在的、過(guò)多的縱欲享樂(lè)。
